This is a lecture regarding Iranian Architecture and Urban Design. Four Iranian designers come from Virginia Tech WAAC with both academic backgrounds in the US and Iran. With their diverse living/study experience, they did a tremendous job in urban design and architecture research, familiar with cultural-oriented research to analyze the architectural and social interaction behind modern Iranian cities.
This lecture will start from four Iranian cities: Tehran, Kashan, Kerman, and Isfahan, zoom into specific public realms, introducing their architectural and urban design features. Speakers will briefly analyze the general condition of each city and then utilize an architecture case as an example to illustrate both the urban and architecture stories. The building histories, design strategies, sustainable considerations, and local demographic conditions behind these cities and designs will highlight this lecture.
From the standpoint of architecture, Iran has diverse gardens that are valuable with respect to sustainability. Iranian gardens are a symbol of heaven and their geometrical structure makes them distinguished in the world. As the climate of Iran is hot and dry, the issue of lacking water reveals itself. This includes gardening and plantation purposes as well. As a result, having a garden is an essential factor to confront the difficulty of dryness and heat in Iran, especially in the southern and central parts. In this lecture, an introduction to a Persian garden will be presented. Then, characteristics of Persian gardens, as a case study of Shazdeh Mahan Garden (Mahan prince garden) will be reviewed. The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate the adaptability and longevity of Shazdeh Mahan Garden as one of the best practices in Persian gardens that have remained unchanged over more than two millennia.

Kashan one of the historic cities in Iran which is known for its beautiful Sand Deserts, Caravanserai, and Traditional Houses. Furthermore, the evidence of the human presence in Kashan goes back to the Paleolithic period. The architecture of the houses is made with local and traditional arts. Moreover, each building unit is fully equipped and suitable for human life in the four seasons of the year. These houses have features, for example, when constructing them to anticipate the extreme heat of summer, and the extreme wind of winter. The traditional wind towers help the building to be sustainable over years. There is also a crypt in the old houses to keep fresh and cold water for inhabitants. This presentation will demonstrate traditional sustainability in traditional houses in Kashan.

Tehran has been one of the most strategic cities in Iran. It has gained tremendous power after being selected as the capital city in the eighteenth century. The settlement of Tehran dates back over 7,000 years. It was in 1776 under the Qajar king that Tehran became Iran's capital. This dream of power changed the character of its original community, which was primarily agrarian. Nowadays, the way that Tehranis encounter city life has profoundly changed. Thus, I would argue that Tehran is a city full of emptiness. The emptiness that is the product of modernity and individualism overflows one of Asia's fast-growing cities. With its rapid expansion and the rise of its population from half a million in 1940 to 5.4 million in 1980, the city emerged as a metropolis facing ecological limitations. The contrast between poor and rich, south and north, desert, and mountain plays a significant role in Tehran's image toward the viewing audience. Tehran reveals different aspects of itself to those who study it and those who walk in it. Thus, the city's greatness may vary when one starts to experience Tehran. This presentation tries to answer the following question by taking the reader through the history, memories, and hidden, yet important, aspects of Tehran through the lens of loss; What happens to the people's memory and their sense of belonging to a place when the built environment is radically transformed?
